But whether the movie is good or bad, it is always nice to read the book before you see the movie. Below is a list of just a few of the great books still coming out as movies this year, with the release dates. Stop in at your local branch to pick up a copy of the book now, or follow the link below to put one on hold.

World War Z by Max Brooks – June 21
Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan – August 7
Paranoia by Joseph Finder – August 16
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare – August 23
Serena by Ron Rash – September 27
Carrie by Stephen King – October 18

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug  by JRR Tolkien – December 13

What book do you think should be made into a movie?

Guys Read: West Michigan Whitecaps

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

Some boys are less motivated to read due to a lack of role models. They may think reading isn’t cool or is only for girls. Not true at KDL!

Meet the West Michigan Whitecaps!

(From left to right: Colin Kaline, Matt Perry, Dean Green and Warwick Saupold)

Despite all the time these guys spend on the field, they still realize the importance of taking time to read.

Fortunately KDL has them covered with lots of great books for sports fans of all ages.  Check out these book lists for kids, teens, and adults, or a recent post about Chris Crutcher, a popular teen author who writes books that center around athletes.

Also, don’t forget, there is 1 more week left to enter Guys Read to Win.  You could win an autographed copy of The Wednesday Wars by Gary Schmidt, a book that prominently features Mickey Mantle and other players from the 1968 Yankees.  All you have to do is rate or review a book for Guys Recommend by the end of April and you are entered.

Guys Read with Chris Crutcher

Sunday, April 22nd, 2012

Chris Crutcher, award-winning teen author of Deadline and Whale Talk, as well many other titles, takes a little time to tell us why he thinks guys reading is important, and to recommend one of his favorite guy titles:

You can find Chris’s books here, and while you are at it, check out his recommended titles — Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and the Guys Read short story anthologies edited by Jon Scieszka.

Don’t forget that we also have a Guys Read contest going on right now, until the end of April. All you have to do to enter is rate or review a book on our Guys Recommend review page, and you could win an autographed copy of The Wednesday Wars by Gary Schmidt or an American Chillers poster autographed by Johnathan Rand.

If you could recommend any book to Guys, what would it be?

Guys Read Digital Books

Monday, February 6th, 2012

When looking at the research about how to encourage guys to become readers, one point that comes up over and over again involves providing guys with a reading format that they enjoy.  Formats could include traditional books, comics, audiobooks, or a whole host of other formats.

One option that might be just the right fit for guys who like technology would be digital books or digital audiobooks.  KDL has a very robust digital collection and there are many great guy titles ready to be devoured on a variety of devices from eReaders like the Kindle or Nook, to tablets like the iPad or from smart phones to computers.  That toy that many guys might not want to put down in favor of a book, can actually be the reading tool needed to get them going.

Check out our Digital Collection at ebooks.kdl.org and let us know in the comments what some of the great guy titles you find there are.  If you don’t find what you are looking for you can always suggest a purchase.  Here are a few great titles to get you started.

The Enemy by Charlie Higson

Okay for Now by Gary Schmidt

Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz

Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer

Heat by Mike Lupica

Guys Read: Thriller edited by Jon Scieszka

Guys Recommend

Friday, January 13th, 2012

One aspect of our brand new Guys Read site is a section called Guys Recommend, where guys can log in to rate books and, if they want, write their own reviews. Not only that, but you can also search through all the ratings and reviews to find the perfect book for your next read.

This is your opportunity to be heard. Have you read a great book lately? If so, tell us about it. Was the last book you read truly dreadful?  Log in and rate it accordingly. You can even comment on other reviews if you want to add in your own two cents.

The more people rate and review, the more helpful the site becomes. So, head on over to Guys Recommend, rate some books and help us make this tool a fantastic resource.
