Nonfiction for Preschoolers

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

If you have little ones who need to be coaxed into reading  storybooks, steer them toward the nonfiction section of the library.  It may just open a whole new world for them, a world in which they like books, after all.

At Kent District Library, nonfiction titles (factual books rather than stories) are arranged by number, using the Dewey Decimal System.  Many branches have Dewey Decimal  guides posted in the children’s area, but our librarians would be happy to show you around, or just dive right in and browse.

Nonfiction Preschoolers Might Like

Sharks

Animals:  Look for animals between J590 and J599, and between J636 and J639.  Dinosaurs are in the J560’s.  Shark books like this one can be found at J597.13.  There are animal books for many different reading levels, but don’t be afraid to get a book just for its pictures.  You don’t have to read your preschoolers every word for them to enjoy the book.

Fire Engines Vehicles:  Look in the J620’s for books about planes, trains, and automobiles.  Preschoolers will love the large pictures of all the details of these machines.  Fire Engine books like this one can be found at or near 628.9259.

Kung Fu Panda

Movie Guides: Picture books featuring all of the details of blockbuster movies are available in the J791’s.  Even a die-hard video fan may be willing to open some of these.  Look for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Wall-E, and more.  They are so popular, you might need to place a hold on one.

Other popular nonfiction areas for preschoolers include J745.5 for crafts, J398 for fairy tales, folk tales and Mother Goose, J741.5973 for comic books, and more and more; please explore.
