Remembering Nora Ephron

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012

The Washington Post has confirmed the death of Nora Ephron.  She died today from complications of a long bout of leukemia.  She was responsible for such movies as Sleepless in Seattle and When Harry Met Sally.  Her sense of humor was wonderful and shined in such books as I Feel Bad About My Neck and I Remember Nothing.  Her audiobooks are fantastic, as she did the reading and really put her inflection in the words.

Her works come highly recommended!  Kent District Library has a wonderful collection of Nora’s books and movies for your perusal.  Follow this link to see a list of titles.

LaughFest – KDL Shares the Humor!

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

Kent District Library celebrates LaughFest along with the West Michigan community by sharing humorous book lists for young and old!  If you see a book that catches your fancy, you may request it with your KDL card. Stop by your local library branch or call 616-784-2007 for assistance.

March 8 – March 18
This is the second year for LaughFest,  the well-received Gilda’s Club “Festival of Laughter.” Many nationally-known, popular comedians, such as Whoopi Goldberg, will ply their trade at Grand Rapids venues. There will also be plenty of local talent supporting the cause. “LaughFest provides a way to raise awareness and funds for a very important cause — supporting children, adults, families and friends as they find their smile and laughter in the midst of a cancer or grief journey. All proceeds from LaughFest benefit the programs offered through Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids.” (Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids)
Gilda Radner, one of the great American comediennes from the 1970s and 1980s is the club’s namesake. She gained fame as one of the charter members of the “Not Ready for Prime-time Players” on NBC’s Saturday Night Live. She passed away from the disease in 1989.

Literary Herb Gardens with Margaux Drake at the EGR Library

Monday, February 27th, 2012

Sign up for this free class on Sunday, March 11 at 2:00 PM with Margaux Drake at the EGR Library.

Sponsored by the Friends of the East Grand Rapids Library

Learn how to re-purpose all kinds of unique containers and make them into table-top herb gardens! These scrumptious little container gardens may then be transplanted outside when warm weather arrives!  A few lucky attendees will go home with a little garden of their own. All will go home with instructions and perhaps a kit.

Margaux Drake is the WOTV 4 Women expert for healthy eats! A certified raw food chef, she owns The M. Drake Company, an interior design, garden design and plant-based cuisine consultancy where she helps create ‘Heaven on Earth’ spaces.

“I get to spend each day feeding my true passion,” Margaux said.  “Whether I’m on my hands and knees in the garden planting seeds or turning those seeds, when mature, into a tasty meal for my family, I love it. I am focused on creating a healthy heaven-on-earth-Home for my family. What’s not to like about that?”

A graduate of the University of Michigan, Margaux has over a decade of design experience. Her philanthropy, The Giving Gardens, allows her to play in gardens all over Michigan, but she also loves to grow her own fruit, vegetables and herbs at home in her family’s organic kitchen garden. Her home, garden and recipes are featured regularly in newspapers, magazines, radio and on television. Her daughter, at age 10, became one of the youngest certified raw food chefs in the country. In addition to her professional work, Margaux’s other passions include her role as a wife and mother of three, a vintage car enthusiast and an ultra-marathoner and  triathlete.
