Visit Katie L. at the Griffins Game

Katie L., the elephant, will be making a special appearance at the Griffins hockey game on Wednesday, February 24. Be sure to stop by the KDL information table to say hi and learn about all the exciting things the library has to offer.

Everyone Gathers to Read in EGR

The East Grand Rapids branch of KDL is planning Everyone Gathers to Read (E.G.R.), a community-wide month-long event that encourages all community members to read the same book and participate in activities, contests and programs. This season’s E.G.R. will focus on Hello, Hello by Dan Zanes.

Programs for E.G.R. include:
Hola, featuring the Grand Rapids Symphony Petting Zoo, on Sunday, February 14 at 2:00 p.m.
Namaste on Sunday, February 21 at 2:00 p.m.
Jambo featuring dancers from Moving Co. on Sunday, February 28 at 2:00 p.m.
Finale Party on Sunday, March 7 at 2:00 p.m.

You can also get involved in the E.G.R. Bookmark Contest. Design a bookmark using Hello, Hello by Dan Zanes as inspiration. Several bookmarks will be selected and printed for distribution at the Finale Party. Bookmarks are due by February 28.

Or get out your camera and take a picture or two using Hello, Hello as inspiration for the E.G.R. Photo Contest. Submissions will be accepted February 14-28, 2010. Photographs will be displayed in the library and celebrated at the Finale Party.

Or if you’re a poet, enter the E.G.R. Poetry Contest. Write a poem using Hello, Hello as inspiration. Adults, teens and kids are encouraged to submit poems to the library. Several will be selected and displayed at the Finale Party.

Celebrate “The Lightning Thief” Movie

If you’re a fan of The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, then you don’t want to miss KDL’s celebrations of the new Lightning Thief movie coming out February 12.

Celebrate the opening of the film with games, crafts and fun on Friday, January 22 at 3:00 p.m. at the Cascade Twp. branch.

Then continue the fun on Saturday, February 20 at 2:00 p.m. at the Kentwood branch with more crafts and games.

In The Lightning Thief, Riordan uses the concepts of ancient Greek mythology to bring life to a story of a modern-day boy, Percy Jackson.

Be a Ruff Reader at KDL

Ruff Readers is a unique read-aloud program that pairs kids ages six and up with trained therapy dogs and handlers who love to hear a good story. It’s a great way to practice reading in a comfortable environment

KDL has partnered with West Michigan Therapy Dogs, Inc. since 2002 to present Ruff Readers at KDL branches. Registration is required at all Ruff Readers sessions. Call 616-784-2007 to register for a 15-minute session.

Ruff Readers is available at several KDL branches, including Plainfield Township, Gaines Township, and Grandville.

Grandville Reads!

The Grandville branch of KDL is participating in Grandville Reads, a community-wide program for all ages, running from January through March 2010. The Greater Grandville Community will share in the reading of Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. Pick up a Grandville Reads brochure at the Grandville branch library for details.

Grandville Reads activities include:

Make a Difference with Just Pennies Drop your donations in any of the penny jars throughout town or at Macatawa Bank of Grandville by March 31, 2010.

Meet the Illustrator Susan Roth, illustrator of Listen to the Wind, will speak at the Grandville branch of the Kent District Library on Wednesday, March 3 at 6:30 p.m.

Reading Around Town Photo Contest Submit a photo of someone reading around town and our community will choose the winner! Guidelines and entry forms are available at the Grandville branch or online. Photos are due February 16.

Greg Mortenson Visits GVSU Mr. Mortenson will speak at Grand Valley State University on Tuesday, April 6 at 7:00 p.m.

Our Town Reads: Watch Me Read, Too Grandville preschoolers, get ready to read with this fun early literacy game that kicks off in area preschools in January.

Let’s Talk About It: Three Cups of Tea Adult Book Discussion at the Grandville branch on Thursday, March 18, 6:30 p.m.

Big Kids Book Club for kids 6 and up at the Grandville branch, Wednesday, March 31, 6:30 p.m.

Have Lots of Lego Fun at KDL

It’s Lego mania at the Kent District Library

The Byron Twp. branch is having a Lego Celebration! Contact the branch for details on how to enter your Lego creation before December 28, then join us for the Celebration on Wednesday, December 30 at 11:00 a.m.

Enter your Lego creations in the 2nd Annual Lego contest at the Walker branch by Monday, January 25. Judging will take place the first week of February.

On Sunday, January 3 at 2:00 p.m. the East Grand Rapids branch will host a Lego Party as part of the Family Sundays series. Stop by the branch for details on how to participate.

You can also drop in at several KDL branches to make your own special Lego or Duplo creations with materials provided by the library. These Lego Family Block Parties will be held:

Happy Holiday Magic Show

Michigan magician Gordon Russ will be entertaining families on Saturday, December 12 at 10:30 a.m. at the Plainfield Twp. Branch during the Happy Holiday Magic Show. Bring the whole family and enjoy a magic show full of snowmen, elves and lots of fun!

Gordon has been entertaining with magic around the world since 1988. You don’t want to miss this show!
