Quick Facts about MeLCat for KDL Cardholders

Thursday, December 17th, 2015

Now that MeLCat service has been restored, we thought it’d be a good opportunity to review what exactly MeLCat is, what you as a KDL cardholder can get out of it, and how the service works:

Kent District Library participates in the statewide resource sharing system, MeLCat, which makes the collections of over 400 participating public, academic and school libraries available to KDL cardholders.

  • KDL cardholders may request print items using MeLCat, but not audio or video material.
  • MeLCat requests count toward the maximum 25 holds. (Note: This is a change from the previous policy.)
  • You may only request items that are currently on the shelf at participating MeLCat libraries. You cannot place a hold on checked out material.
  • Delivery to your KDL branch will average about one week.
  • Cardholders may check on the status of MeLCat requests and renew MeLCat material that is not yet due by accessing MyMeLCat. Visit catalog.kdl.org and click on the link to MyMeLCat in the right column.
  • If a MeLCat item is overdue, KDL staff may renew it at their discretion. Please check at your branch, or call 616-784-2007.

Here are a few commonly-asked questions about the MeLCat service:

How will I know when my material arrives?
Notification will be sent using the same method as KDL holds: phone, text or email as you’ve requested. You can also check a request status using MyMeLCat.

At which branch is my item available for pickup?
You can check MyMeLCat to find out where your requests are waiting.

Why do my notices say that it’s at Alpine when I usually use another branch?
One of the challenges we are working to resolve is that MeLCat notifications indicate that material is located at the Alpine Branch, which is only true if you chose to get your MeLCat items at Alpine. Please check your MyMeLCat account to verify the location status of items or ask KDL staff for assistance.

What if my MeLCat items are not on the hold shelf at my branch?
Check your MyMeLCat account to see where you wanted them picked up. Please call 616-784-2007 to verify that those items are there, or ask branch staff to verify this for you.

Why is my hold taking so long if the item is available at a nearby library?
The MeLCat system fills requests with the first available item from any participating library in Michigan, not necessarily from the closest owning library.

Reminder: Suspension of MeLCat InterLibrary Loan Nov. 18-Dec. 12

Thursday, November 12th, 2015

Update: Please visit our Dec. 17, 2015 post about MeLCat for more updated information.

Please remember that beginning Wednesday, November 18, no new MeLCat requests can be placed. Incoming and outgoing materials will continue to be processed, and currently checked out materials can still be renewed and managed using My MeLCat. From Wednesday, December 2 through December 11, MeLCat items will not be processed. Full MeLCat services are expected to resume on Saturday, December 12. For more information, please visit the MeLCat Server Migration FAQ for Patrons.

If you have items that KDL does not own and you wish to request them from other libraries via MelCat, please do so before next Wednesday.

If between November 18 to December 12, you find you need an item which KDL does not own, there are neighboring libraries able to assist KDL customers.

This link offers a directory to Lakeland Library Cooperative Member Libraries. These libraries will honor KDL library cards. However, holds are not allowed and patrons must return material to the library where it was checked out.

Grand Rapids Public Library, KDL cardholders can:

  • Check out materials and place holds on GRPL owned material.
  • Holds must be picked up at a GRPL location.
  • Patrons may return to KDL but items are not checked in for 5-10 days.
  • Can search in MelCat, but may not place requests.

 Grand Rapids Community College Library

  • KDL cardholders can get a free community guest card to check out AV, books and magazines.
  • Must have driver’s license/picture ID with current address.
  • Can search in MelCat, but may not place requests.

 Davenport University Libraries

  • Offers a free community card to check out books, no magazines.
  • Must have driver’s license/picture ID with current address.
  • Not listed in MelCat.

As always, please visit your local KDL branch or call our friendly Patron Services Department at 616-784-2007 for assistance.

Take a Sneak Peek at KDL’s New Catalog!

Monday, August 17th, 2015

With one month until our September 17 launch of the new, exclusive KDL catalog, we thought a status update and a sneak peek may be in order. As you can see from this photo taken in KDL’s learning lab, we’ve been very busy training our staff on the new setup. TrainingLab_Photo1-smaller

We apologize for the temporary inability to access interlibrary loan services while we migrate to our new system. By October 1, KDL cardholders can use MeLCat, the statewide resource sharing system, to request items KDL does not own. There will be a direct link to MeLCat from the KDL catalog and it is an easy electronic process to request books. By going directly to MeLCat from the KDL catalog, we will offer our customers access to much larger library collections around the state. Over 400 of Michigan’s public, school, college and university libraries participate in MeLCat, including 39 of the 41 Lakeland Library Cooperative member libraries.

The new catalog will be a significant improvement for KDL cardholders; offering a better search experience, easier access our digital collection and more customer-friendly policies, like increased allowable holds and the ability to avoid overdue fines by renewing material (that does not have holds) up to three times.

Change can be a struggle, but we think within a short time, you will come to love the enhanced features of the new catalog, while still enjoying the ability to interlibrary loan material. Please bear with us through this process as we work on increasing and improving our services to you. For more information on the new KDL catalog, please see our previous blog post and read through our Frequently Asked Questions.

Change to Placing Holds

Thursday, July 30th, 2015

KDL_logo_300dpiAs we prepare for our exclusive new catalog, we regret some
temporary inconveniences. As of July 31, KDL cardholders may continue to place holds on material owned by KDL. However, non-KDL cardholders will no longer be able to place holds on KDL material. KDL cardholders will no longer be able to place holds on non-KDL material.

Interlibrary loan between KDL and most Lakeland member libraries will resume by October 1 when KDL rejoins MelCat, the statewide resource sharing system.

For more information, please see our previous blog post about KDL’s new catalog  and our list of Frequently Asked Questions.
