Hi Andy,

The activities at this program will indeed be directed at the ability level of your six-year-old. You're right that the majority of these activities will be too complex for a three-year-old. Whether or not you feel comfortable letting your six-year-old participate without you is dependent upon your feelings and your child's maturity level. If you're comfortable with it, it is perfectly alright to be in a different part of the library with your three-year-old while your six-year-old participates in the Wimpy Kid activities.

I just want to emphasize, however, that it is not acceptable to leave the building while your child is at this program. But being in a different area of the library would be fine. :-)

Thank you!

I have a 3 and 6 year old. The 6 year old is ready the Wimpy kid series of books so this would be great. My question, when I go what should I do with my 3 year old? Can my 6 year old enjoy the activities as I remain in another part of the library with my 3 year old?

Hi Laura,

The Herrick District Library is not part of Kent District Library. We are all a part of the Lakeland Library Cooperative, which is why you can use your library card at all of our branches. However, our programs are planned entirely separately from each other.

You could always contact someone at the Herrick District Library and offer the idea as a program suggestion. Contact information is available at their website at www.herrickdl.org.

Thanks! Happy Wednesday!
Hi Mark,

The youth librarians at each of our branches schedule programs when they think it will best serve their specific community. It is quite possible that some of these times were scheduled with certain groups in mind, like daycares or schools, who could attend during the day.

It is also possible that decisions were made with the schedules of specific school districts in mind. For example, the Plainfield Township Library is hosting this event on Friday, February 12 at 2:00 p.m. This particular branch is located within the Northview Pubic School District, and February 12 is a day off in that particular school district. So Northview Public School students would not in fact be in school on that specific day.

That said, you are completely welcome to speak with the youth librarian at the branch(es) nearest you about program scheduling. They try very hard to accommodate the various schedules of families within their communities, so it's always good to let them know when works best for you.

Thank you!

I agree that anything set between 7:30 am and 3:30 pm is ridiculous as most children that are 6-12 are still in school. What is the point? I was excited for my kids to go to this then looked at the time. 2-3 pm Are you looking at getting entire classes to go to these things?

Hi Tina,

Thank you so much for your comment! Actually, the Gaines Township Branch IS having the Wimpy Kid program, and I missed it when I wrote the above blog post! The Gaines Township Branch will be hosting a "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" program on Monday, March 1 at 6:30 p.m.

I will edit the above blog post to include the Gaines Township Branch. I apologize for my error when posting about this event, and thank you for catching that omission. I hope you and your daughter will be able to attend.

Thank you!
