Introducing the new KDL.org 

Thank you for visiting the brand new KDL.org website!  Although you’ll still find all of the great content you’ve come to expect, including all the latest information on library news, events, and resources, we’ve updated the site with a fresh new look and added a few new features that we think you’ll enjoy!  Among some of these new features are:

  • The addition of a new KDL Blog, which allows user to stay current with all the latest KDL happenings and provide comments and feedback!

  • Interactive recommended reading lists: Easily browse through lists of librarian recommended books, organized by genre, topic, and more!

  • Embedded RSS feeds provide the latest movies, music, and gaming news! (Teens page).

  • Quick search function:  Easily search the catalog, site, or find branch information.

  • Site Navigation:  Updated interface allows for increased ease of navigation including “popular page links” for each primary section (About, Books & More, Events, Reference Resources, Parents & Kids, and Teens).

New Oprah book

Meet Janice Fonger, KDL’s New Development Coordinator

On October 1, Kent District Library welcomed Janice Fonger to the  newly created position of Development Coordinator. Fonger will oversee the creation the new KDL Endowment Fund, which will support broad-based initiatives that will reach our large service area population and benefit the 18 branch libraries. The Grand Rapids Community Foundation will oversee the investments and administration of the KDL Endowment Fund.

Fonger will organize the Endowment Fund and develop a Board. She will oversee fundraising efforts and fund distributions, develop donor relations, plan and oversee annual and planned giving campaigns, and promote the Endowment Fund in the community.

Fonger has a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology and Social Science from Southern Oregon State University and has participated in GVSU’s Public Administration program. She has worked with a wide variety of public service and nonprofit organizations, including the Adoptive Family Support Network and the public Museum of Grand Rapids.

If you like country music and have kids, then Buck Howdy is your man!! He twangs with the best of them, and provides some fun new songs as well as new renditions of old favorites (including a duet with Laurie Berkner on “Happy Trails”)!! He also does a mean “Hokey Pokey” and an inspiring “This Little Light of Mine!”My favorite song is the one about Bucks “favorite kind of bugs” because they’re my favorite kind of bugs, too!! You’ll have to listen to see what Buck Howdy and I have in common!written by T. Reid

Database of Award Winning Children’s Literature

Looking for good books set in France..or with a male main character for an 8 year old boy? Look no further than the “Database of Award-Winning Children’s Literature” http://www.dawcl.com/introduction.html compiled by librarian Lisa R. Barkle. This database is very easy to use with dropdown menus within searchable topics including:

age of reader
gender of the protagonist
ethnicity/nationality of characters or tale languages in the story other than English
publication year

The results contain title, author/illustrator, a concise annotation, listing of the award won, year of publication, and format of the book. The nearly 7,000 record database includes a great explanation for the searchable topics and the listing and calendar of over 60 included awards. Be sure to bookmark it today!
