Author Michael Crichton Dies at 66

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Michael Crichton photoMichael Crichton, the author of the blockbuster science-fiction novels Jurassic Park, The Andromeda Strain, and State of Fear, has died unexpectedly in Los Angeles on November 4, 2008, after a private battle with cancer. He was 66.

Crichton’s medical and sci-fi thrillers often focus on the conflict between science and nature. The public loved his ability to play on our fears of scientific and technological change. He was also creator of the popular TV show ER, based on his real-life medical career.

Pandora Radio

pandora.jpg

Do you get sick of listening to the radio, when you only like about half the songs that are played? On Pandora Radio you can create your own group of distinct radio stations based on artists, songs, or types of music you like. Love the White Stripes? You can have a radio station that plays their music as well as the music of other similar artists.  While it isn’t always perfectly accurate, it does give you the option to give each song choice a thumbs up or thumbs down. This way you can narrow down the station to only include artists or songs you really like.

On each song there is also a menu button. If you select this you can choose the options to not play this song again for a month, ask why this song was selected, move the song to another station, bookmark the song, or buy the album the song is on.  So if I thought the song Heart Shaped Box by Nirvana didn’t belong in my White Stripes radio station, I could move it to another station, or create a seperate Nirvana station.

It’s very easy to sign up for a Pandora account, and it’s lots of fun to create your own great radio station.

November is National Adoption Month

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

November is National Adoption Month and we’d like to invite you to check out some of the helpful adoption resources and tools the Kent District Library has to offer. The goal of National Adoption Month is to raise public awareness of the thousands of children waiting in foster care for permanent, loving families. From helpful books, periodicals and other reference resources, the Kent District Library can help you learn more about the adoption process as well as the children that need your help. Throughout the month of November, KDL will highlight a variety of adoption resources available both in our branches and in the community. Also, be sure to stop by our East Grand Rapids, Gaines Township and Plainfield Township branches to see our Michigan Heart Gallery exhibits, a pictorial tribute to foster children.

NaNoWriMo 2008

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

No, that title isn’t just a bunch of gibberish — it’s “National Novel Writing Month,” held in November every year. This year is the 10th anniversary, so if you’ve ever dreamed of writing your own novel, what better time to start than now?

Your goal: Write a 175-page (50,000 word) novel by midnight, November 30. Sound impossible? Don’t worry — NaNoWriMo is all about enthusiasm and perseverance, not high quality writing. Just let go, lower your expectations, and let the words flow.

Sound interesting? Check out the official NaNoWriMo site for more information or to sign up.

Need some help to get started? There’s a Grand Rapids area forum so you can find other writers and NaNoWriMo events near you. Or check out the Writers’ Group that meets at our Cascade Township branch.

(Hey teens — NaNoWriMo also has a Young Writers Program just for you!)

 Happy writing!
