Do You Need That Receipt?

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Help KDL go green! Next time you check out materials from your local KDL branch library, you’ll be able to opt out of printing a receipt.

As part of KDL’s green initiative, and in response to numerous patron requests, we are now offering the option to not print a receipt at all of our self-check machines. If you would like a receipt, please take one. But if you don’t, simply say no.

Thanks for being a part of KDL’s sustainability efforts!

Mac Geek Monday – Grab Application

Monday, July 6th, 2009

If you are running OS X and have never looked in the Applications then Utilities folder, you may be missing out on some great tools.  One excellent tool is called Grab.  This is a very easy to use application for taking a snapshot of your screen or only a portion of the screen.  There are actually four different options available for capturing an image.

After starting up this application, look on the menu bar for the “Capture.”  The first option is for “Selection.”  (This is actually the one my 9-year-old uses the most for saving a picture of the dress-up dolls she likes to play with on the internet.)  Click on Selection and you will be able to click and drag over the portion of the screen you want to capture.  The image is shown in a separate window, click on File – Save As to save the file where you want it and with the name you choose.

The second capture option is “Window.”  This allows you to capture one of the windows currently open on your desktop.  Simply click on the window and you have a great shot to include in a slide show without any cropping needed to remove the rest of the desktop.

The last two options are similar, “Screen” and “Timed Screen.”  These capture the entire screen.  The timed screen gives you a minute before it captures the screen.  There is a sound indicator.

Let us know in the comments if there are any great Mac applications you would like us to cover in future weeks!

Big Challenges, Bigger Opportunities

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

If you’ve visited a KDL branch lately, then you probably know that the library is busier than ever. In 2008, nearly 6 million items were checked out, 160,000 people attended library programs, and over 3.4 million people visited our branches. To help accommodate this growth, some of our municipalities have even initiated new building projects.

However, one unfortunate trend is that as library use continues to grow, property tax revenue has not. Taxable value, while once growing at 5% or more annually, has now flattened to a near no-growth position. Other impacts on KDL revenue, including tax tribunal judgments, tax captures, and shrinking revenues for state aid and penal fines, have also significantly reduced library funding.

In order to maintain the high level of library service our customers have come to expect, it is our goal to proactively manage these financial challenges while staying mindful of the long-term implications. By leveraging technology, streamlining processes, reducing and reallocating library staff positions, sharing organizational resources, and aggressively pursuing ways to generate revenue outside of our traditional funding base, we plan to meet that goal.

We are working hard to make the most of your tax dollars as we move forward. However, we encourage you to show your support during these difficult times in a number of ways, including advocacy, constructive feedback, and consideration of a donation to the KDL Fund. We sincerely appreciate all that our community has helped us to achieve and look forward to a bright future together.

Thank you!
