“One Book” Update

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

Due to current economic challenges and the need to refocus our efforts to support our strategic initiatives, the Kent District Library will no longer be participating in a One Book, One County author event. However, we will continue our commitment to bringing quality authors to our communities through grants, corporate sponsorships, partnerships, and financial support from our Friends groups.  For example, we once again plan to bring in a nationally-known author for our second annual “A Novel Experience” fundraising event in the fall of 2010. We will also plan to bring in many popular local authors throughout the year. This spring alone we’ll be visited by Tom Rademacher, Michael Lindley, Linda Nemec Foster, Susan Roth and more.  We also plan to collaborate with many of our local cities and townships to develop wonderful Community Reads  projects.

We appreciate your understanding and look forward to a great 2010 and beyond!

iTunes University

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

iTunes U screenshot

In addition to the songs, movies, and apps available through the iTunes store, did you know many universities, museums, public broadcasting stations, and state education organizations have free educational lessons, lectures, audiobooks, language lessons, and programs available through iTunes U?

A recent morning search through the U allowed me to tour the Museum of Modern Art, begin learning Japanese, and watch an interview with In Defense of Food author Michael Pollan, all from the comfort of my cozy armchair in my pjs and fuzzy bunny slippers.

Downloadable media can be played on your Mac or PC computer or easily accessed from iPods and iPhones… here’s how.

Check out this video to find out all about this exciting new student of life learning experience: An Introduction to iTunes U, and drop us a comment on your favorite learning opportunities…
