Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

Since Katie is often out and about at different branches and community events, she’ll be using this page to keep her fans updated about her busy schedule, as well as sharing her favorite books and library tips. She’s also looking forward to posting her favorite photos of herself with all the people she meets, as well as her world travels this summer during our “Take Katie L. on Vacation” Summer Reading Club program.

If you have a Facebook account, go to Katie L.’s page and click “Like.” If you have friends that you think should be fans of Katie too, use the “Share” link on the bottom of the left menu to invite them to like the page as well.

Michigan Thumbs Up Winner

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

The books have been read & discussed and the votes have been tallied.  The winner of the 2011 Michigan Thumbs Up! Award is Sorta Like a Rock Star by Matthew Quick.

Although Amber and her single alcoholic mother are currently homeless and have been secretly crashing in a school bus, the 17-year-old remains a self-proclaimed princess of hope. And why not, when she has an adorable rescued dog and fellow socially challenged friends in the Franks Freak Force Federation? She is teaching English after school to Catholic Korean women; she is learning the art of haiku from a once-reclusive Vietnam vet; she is the reigning champion in a weekly word battle against a Nietzsche-loving senior at the Methodist Retirement Home; and she lives according to her tremendous faith. Her world and faith shatter, however, when her mother suffers a violent tragedy, and afterward, Amber struggles to reclaim her faith and optimism.

Three additional books have been selected as Honor books: Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan, Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly, and After Ever After by Jordan Sonnenblick.

If you have read one of these books, give this posting a thumbs up!
