GET READY! Kent County

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

If disaster strikes, would you be ready? KDL is teaming up with the Kent County Sheriff Department, Health Department and the American Red Cross to make sure you are prepared for an emergency. The GET READY! Kent County twelve-month citizen preparedness program focuses on a different area of emergency preparedness each month.

In September, you are encouraged to store a two-week supply of food and water. Check out this fact sheet for more information.

Remember, when disaster strikes, it is easier to cope when you are prepared!

From the Director

Monday, September 12th, 2011

Lance Werner

Now that I’ve been on the job for almost six months, I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little about myself and my vision for Kent District Library in the coming years.

I am honored to have been invited to serve the Kent District Library as its Director, and I am eager to become a part of this dynamic organization. The Kent District Library is recognized as one of the best public libraries in the nation and is warmly embraced by the community it serves.

I come to Kent District Library with a full appreciation of what has made the Library so successful: a dedicated and capable staff eager to serve patrons of all ages and from all backgrounds, devoted Friends of the Library groups and volunteers, a forward-looking Board of Trustees dedicated to quality library service; and all of you, the residents of the Kent County who have loyally supported the Library over the years.

People have called me “The Loud Librarian,” not because I speak loudly (although my voice does carry!), but because I believe that libraries today cannot sit quietly and expect that people will understand the value that the library brings to the community.  Libraries fuel amazing experiences that influence individuals and their communities. KDL branches are the heart of the community and at the heart of life-long learning and self-improvement.  Libraries are full of stories and stories have power.

Now, I invite you to speak up as well!  Tell us how the Kent District Library has influenced you; share your memories; communicate its importance to you, your family and our community.  Tell us your story.

KDL Remembers September 11

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

As we remember the tragic events that took place on September 11, 2001, we honor those who risked their lives, pay tribute to those who lost their lives, and mourn with those who lost a loved one. We encourage you to join the 9/11 Tribute Movement and share what you will do to honor the 9/11 victims, survivors and those that rose in service in response to the attacks. If you are looking for other ways to get involved, check out this WOOD TV8 article about September 11 Events in West Michigan.

If you’d like to learn more, check out one of KDL’s many materials focusing on the tragedy that took place ten years ago.

We encourage you to leave us a comment below to share your September 11 thoughts and tributes.

Let’s Celebrate KDLville!

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

It’s party time! Celebrate with Katie L. the elephant as she cuts the ribbon and welcomes you to KDLville, KDL’s new early literacy play space. Families with children ages 6 and under are invited to have fun with crafts, games, balloon animals, face painting, and a dance party. And what’s a party without dessert? Come enjoy a piece of our special KDLville cake!

Tuesday, September 13, 10:00 AM – Grandville branch
Sunday, October 16, 2:00 PM – Cascade Township branch
Tuesday, November 15, 10:00 AM – Kentwood branch

KDLville is an interactive early literacy learning center where young children and their caregivers can play, grow, and read. The spaces contain a variety of fun, developmentally appropriate activities that focus on different skills that will help children get ready to read.  Some examples might include a puppet theater, a play grocery store, a train table, pre-writing games, etc.  The activities will be rotated so patrons will get fresh experiences every couple of months. Promotional materials that contain caregiver education on reading readiness will also be provided in the play spaces.

A big thank you goes out to the Friends of the Library groups that funded the KDLville projects!

Come celebrate with us!
