Video: Future Librarian?

Monday, October 31st, 2011

This just goes to show you’re never too young to start thinking about careers. A KDL patron shared this short video of his 2 1/2-year-old son playing library, complete with his sound effects of the “beep” of the self-checkout machine. We think it’s adorable and hope you do too!

What are some ways your children have surprised you with how the library has become part of their lives? Tell us your story!

Teen Halloween Reading

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

With Halloween right around the corner, now is a great time to pickup a spooky book to get you in the mood!

The first book I would recommend is The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, winner of the Newbery Medal in 2009.  The book is not only set mostly in a graveyard, it starts with multiple murders!

Another book to check out is The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff.  This has a nice creepy cover and deals with a changeling who replaced a human baby 16 years ago.

Lastly, check out Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs.  This book is filled with bizarre pictures that will make you glad it is only fiction!

Feel free to leave your own spook suggestion in the comments!

Early Lit Bits: KDLville Early Literacy Play Spaces

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

The East Grand Rapids branch proudly houses one of the original KDLville spaces. Opened in the fall of 2010, it is still going strong today! Dramatic play, such as doll houses and dress-up, is an important component of KDLville spaces as this type of play can help develop language and social skills.

The kids at EGR are particularly fond of the KDLville tree that they all helped bring to life by making colorful leaves at the Writing Center!

From the Director: Yay Us! — KDL & You!

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Congratulations! A comparison of Kent District Library usage data with figures recently reported in Public Libraries magazine (Sept./Oct. 2011) reveals that KDL is outpacing the national average for communities our size. For example, our library visits per capita, circulation per capita and collection turnover (how often an item is checked out in a given year), were nearly two times higher than the national average.

What does this mean to you? It’s proof positive that you love KDL and the wonderful materials and services you find in our libraries. While we don’t need numbers to tell us this, these figures help prove that KDL has some of the most avid library users in the country!

Thank you for using your public library and making KDL way above average.

Sincerely,

Lance Werner Signature

Lance Werner, Director
Kent District Library

Halloween Around the World

Friday, October 21st, 2011

Halloween has been celebrated in different ways for many years all around the world.  It is interesting to see how differently this holiday is treated today in different countries.

The carved pumpkin or Jack-o’-lantern also has an interesting past.  Originally, turnips were used in Ireland and Scotland, but immigrants started using the more readily available pumpkin in the colonies.

Guinness World Records has been keeping track of Halloween feats which include the largest gather of zombies or the heaviest pumpkin, weighing in at over 1,800 lbs.

However you might celebrate Halloween be sure to have a fun and safe holiday!
