Nominate Your Favorite Librarian

Friday, July 20th, 2012

Has a KDL librarian made a real difference in your life? Have they gone above and beyond the call of duty to provide top-notch customer service and excellent programming? Show your appreciation by nominating them for a meaningful award!

Nominations for the national Carnegie Corporation of New York / New York Times I Love My Librarian Award will be accepted through September 12 and must be submitted online.

The award invites library users nationwide to nominate librarians in public libraries, as well as those in school and academic libraries. It is an opportunity for patrons to share how librarians improve the lives of people in their communities.

Ten librarians will win $5,000, a plaque and a $500 travel stipend to attend an awards reception in New York , hosted by The New York Times. The award is administered by the American Library Association with support from Carnegie Corporation of New York and The New York Times.

Early Lit Bits: “Chloe” Book Review

Monday, July 16th, 2012

Chloe by Peter McCarty

Chloe loves family night more than anything, sharing time with her 10 older siblings and 10 younger siblings.  However, when a big television arrives for the family to watch on family night, Chloe finds a way to entertain everyone without technology.  Soon all the children abandon the television and produce their own show!

This is a heart-warming bedtime read, with Peter McCarty’s trademark illustrations.  The spare text allows for plenty of conversation between you and your child as you read together.  Talk with your child about things you can do together for an “unplugged” family night, such as board games, puzzles or coloring.  And if you have any bubble wrap handy, release some energy by popping away!  Talking with your child helps build vocabulary, which is a great way to get ready to read!

This article originally appeared in our Early Lit Bits eNewsletter. Read the most recent issue online or sign up to receive this monthly update highlighting early literacy tips and resources for parents and caregivers.
