Book Review: The Daughters of Mars

Sunday, September 22nd, 2013

The Daughters of MarsThomas Keneally is a marvelously prolific Australian writer perhaps best known as the author of Schindler’s List.

The Daughters of Mars is his 29th book, and quite possibly his best.

Naomi and Sally Durance are young sisters working as nurses in Australia.  When World War I breaks out, they join a volunteer corps of military nurses, stationed first on a hospital ship in the Mediterranean, then on the front lines in France.  Their patients include young men suffering from horrific wounds, virulent disease, trench foot and the effects of chlorine and mustard gas.

The novel examines the morality of war, the changing roles of women in an increasingly complex world, the dawn of modern medicine and the new science of psychology.  The writing is muscular, the story compelling and unforgettable.

OverDrive App and iOS 7

Thursday, September 19th, 2013

OverDrive Media Console

UPDATE (9-24-13): OverDrive has released an app update to address the issues caused by iOS 7. Please install the update and let us know if you continue to experience problems.

If you are a user of KDL’s free eBooks on an iOS device (such as a iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch), please read this important update:

  • When an existing user of the OverDrive Media Console (OMC) app for iOS upgrades to iOS 7 (released yesterday), the app will fail when trying to open a DRM-protected eBook. (Those who download the app after installing iOS 7 are not affected by this issue)
  • OverDrive is working to resolve this issue, but in the meantime, try deauthorizing and reauthorizing the app with your Adobe ID (found in the “Settings” menu).
  • If this does not work, deleting and reinstalling the app should resolve the issue. Please note that this will clear your bookshelf, history and app settings.

Please see http://overdriveblogs.com/library/2013/09/19/overdrive-media-console-ios-7-crash-resolutions for complete details.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and trust that OverDrive will have this problem fixed shortly. If you need any additional help with our digital collection, please call us at 616-784-2007 or fill out our Support Request Form.

A College Student’s Library Story

Tuesday, September 17th, 2013

gsuriHow many times have you heard (or even said), “Everything students need is on the Internet for free and at your fingertips.” Here’s Gurdit Suri, a longtime KDL cardholder and current university student, who sees it differently:

“I am a 19-year-old college student at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan and a proud 17-year veteran user of the KDL Cascade Township branch. When it came to applying for volunteering positions, finding good books to read, learning about different languages, applying for summer internships, gaining admission to colleges, finding ACT preparatory books, writing research papers and learning about different global travel opportunities, the library has always been the invisible hand helping me reach my goals.

“Sure, the Internet is available. Yes, it is instantaneous. And of course, it has millions upon millions of results. But when it comes to trying to achieve my goals and accomplish the tasks that I am blessed to have had the opportunity to do, I have found that where the Internet gives me answers, the library has given me understanding.

“Whether it was a teen librarian who found me a book specially made for students trying to increase their ACT score, or a reference desk assistant who remembered me the next time I walked in and referred to me a book that might help me with the research paper I was working on, or the head librarian who was able to find a scholarship opportunity that fit me perfectly, my local library has been priceless.

“I would not have been awarded the scholarships I received, gotten in the 99th percentile for ACT testing scores in the country, received the awards for academic papers I have written, gotten admission into the third best business school in the country or been able to cost-effectively travel to the places I have been had it not been for the resources and people at my local library: the one true search engine to the answers I want, without fail.”

— G.S. Suri

Who Loves Puppies and Kittens?

Tuesday, September 17th, 2013

You do! Yes you do!

Look at those faces. Look. At. Those. Faces.

From Tuesday, September 17 to Wednesday, October 23, several KDL branches will host mobile pet adoptions and programs on pets, kids and safety. Click on the links for details!

Also, during the month of October, all 18 Kent District Library branches will accept donated items for the Humane Society of West Michigan. Wish list items can be found here. Throw another roll of paper towels (or bag of cat treats or bottle of glass cleaner) in your grocery cart and make a furry creature smile.

This effort is part of KDL’s Happiness Project, an 18-month campaign to promote happy, healthy, helpful attitudes in our branches and our communities.
