Early Lit Bits: Book Review — “Abigail”

Saturday, January 25th, 2014

AbigailAbigail by Catherine Rayner

Abigail is a giraffe who just loves counting, but becomes frustrated when the things she tries to count keeping moving away. From dots on a ladybug to stripes on a zebra, nothing stays put! Finally her animal friends come up with a solution, and they join together to count the stars in the night sky. Beautiful watercolor illustrations and the concept of counting make this a fun read. Read it together as a bedtime story or as a way to start a conversation about counting. Have your child point to the numbers on the pages as Abigail counts. What else around the house could you count together? Perhaps the illustrations will even inspire you to do some painting together, which is a great way to practice fine motor skills and gets your child ready to write!

–Liz W. at KDL’s Plainfield Township branch

Interview with Local Author Gary Schmidt

Friday, January 24th, 2014

Gary Schmidt loves being a professor of English at Calvin College here in Grand Rapids. He’s been asked to give up his “day job” to write full-time, but refuses as he enjoys interacting with students too much. Having twice received a prestigious Newbery Honor Award from the American Library Association is quite an accomplishment for an author, but Professor Schmidt takes it all in stride. We discovered this information about Professor Schmidt during an interview conducted by two of our librarians here at Kent District Library, Morgan Doane and Vanessa Walstra.

The interview was conducted for a new program here at KDL, the Teen Writing Workshop. The first meeting of this wonderful opportunity for local teens to be mentored and inspired by West Michigan authors happens this Saturday, January 25, 3:00 PM at the East Grand Rapids branch.

Please watch the interview below and be inspired… you might be the next Newbery Award winner.

Vote for Your Favorite Genre!

Thursday, January 23rd, 2014

GenreDerbyLogoIt’s time to pony up! This year we are hosting our first ever Genre Derby to raise funds for the library collection. We want you to get in on the action!

Each of KDL’s eight adult fiction genres is represented by a horse. During the Genre Derby, you will be able to nudge your favorite horse past the others by donating funds to the library for purchasing books in your genre of choice. The Derby will continue through February. On March 4, the race will end with a finish line party at Vitale’s in Comstock Park and the winning genre will be crowned champion!

And here’s another reason to cast your vote and donate:  Investment firm Edward Jones and First United Credit Union will both provide a 50 percent match up to $1500. See, even the financial gurus think the derby is a sound investment!

Whether you love mystery, sci-fi, romance or another genre, we would welcome and appreciate your support! Visit the Genre Derby website to join the fun! Scroll down to find the genre you want to support:
