Newspaper Obituaries

Many people who are interested in their family history like to find obituaries.  Obituaries usually have information about the person’s life as well as a list of relatives.  The problem is that there is not one central location for ALL obituaries.  Additionally, many obituaries are not even online.  So the challenge is to find out if the newspaper in the area your ancestors lived has an index or any archived issues.  Additionally, check with the local library to see if they have microfilm copies of the newspaper from that area.

The Western Michigan Genealogical Society has a wonderful database for local obituaries.  The dates and papers covered are given in the description and copies can be ordered directly from the site.
