Read Off Your Fines Week May 7-13

That cookbook you were returning to the library that got wedged behind the backseat of your car and forgotten over the winter. The novel you only allowed yourself five pages a day to read because you never wanted it to end. The coffee table book on cabins in the woods that looked so great on your own coffee table. The country-western CD your daughter put in her backpack last spring and found this spring.

Has your love of books and other KDL materials made it difficult to let go of some of your checked-out items by their due date? Put that love to work for you the week of May 7–13: KDL cardholders are invited to visit a branch, and for every 10 minutes spent reading or listening in the library, $1 in overdue fines will be waived up to a maximum of $10 (does not apply to lost or damaged items or collection fees). For all ages.

** Patrons must do their reading at a KDL branch to receive waived overdue fines. See your local branch for more information.

    COOL BEANS!

  2. Dena Says:

I have a Grand Rapids district library card, but my fines are on KDL materials. Does this promotion apply to me?

  3. Sarah Says:

    See you next week!

  4. Sheri Says:

    Hi Dena,

Unfortunately, we can only waive fines on KDL cards. We don’t have the authority to waive fines on cards from other library systems, even if the fines were on KDL materials.

    Thanks,
    Sheri

  5. Jerry Says:

But if a GRPL cardholder has KDL fines(which can only be accessed by KDL) why wouldn’t they be able to get THEIR KDL fines(which are on KDL’s system) waived? I dont get it.

  6. Sheri Says:

    Hi Jerry,

Unfortunately, with 80+ libraries in the Lakeland Cooperative system, we don’t have the authority to offer this special promotion to all cardholders. Please contact us at 616-784-2007 if you have any questions.

    Thanks,

  7. Jen Says:

Can I come two different days to read off my fines or does it have to be all at once?

  8. Sheri Says:

    Hi Jen,

Yes, you can come multiple days if you’d like, anytime this week :)

    Thanks,

  9. Hannah Says:

This was WONDERFUL!!! What a great idea! I love KDL, SO much! :)

  10. Niki Says:

I love it!!! Will this be offered again? I just saw the notice & will have to miss the event :( But I’m eager to attend the next event; I think pretty much any of us who use the library all the time tend to rack up some fines!

  11. Morgan Jarema Says:

Niki- This is the only one we’ve got scheduled right now, but we’ll put the word out if we do it again.

  12. Wendy Says:

    I love this!!!

  13. Christina Says:

This is a great idea! My children LOVE the library and for once, they had to “earn” their keep by reading ‘off’ their fines! I used this as a learning tool and they got the point after reading for 100 minutes each. :)
    Thanks KDL!

  14. Kathleen Says:

If this is a promotion to waive KDL fines – simply put they are KDL $ fines, on KDL materials, within the KDL system – what on earth does that have to do with the fact I possess a GRPL card … very user “unfriendly”, and inflexible – perhaps you might want to revisit and expand your definition of “customer service”…I guess logic and equity are not part of the formula.

  15. Kathleen Says:

I also wanted to add … if you can take my cash (as a GRPL cardholder) you can certainly, in turn, offer me a credit. I guess the adage money talks at KDL is alive and well … but “credits” during our read off your fines promotion are for KDL carholders only.

  16. Kathleen Says:

I also wanted to add … I find it very interesting that you have the authority to take my cold cash (as a GRPL cardholder)so why don’t you have the authority to manipulate the system, in turn, and offer me the flipside of cold cash, a credit. I guess the adage money talks at KDL is alive and well … but “credits”, discriminately, aren’t for ALL patrons.

Hi Kathleen! Thank you for your comments and interest in our Read Off Your Fines program. We will consider this feedback in any future programs. This is our first time doing a program of this nature and we did decide to limit it to KDL taxpayers. Should you move into our service area and begin paying Kent District Library taxes, we would be happy to update your card so you will be eligible for this and other services.

As for your questions about credits for this program, the intention was to help kids and families reduce the current fines on their accounts while encouraging them to read. In doing so, they would be able to participate in our Summer Reading Programs that start on June 1.
