Thumbs Up! Award Winner Chosen!

The Thumbs Up! Award was established in 1986 to recognize the excellence, and to celebrate the uniqueness of Teen/Young Adult literature. A committee, consisting of Young Adult and Teen Librarians, meets several times during the year to determine the winner. Beginning in 2001, the Thumbs Up! Committee has included a teen vote.  The Thumbs Up! Award is given annually by the Teen Services Division of the Michigan Library Association to an author for an outstanding contribution to teen literature having both literary quality and teen appeal. “Teen” for the award’s purpose is someone between 12-18 years of age. The book must appeal to this age group, both in respect to its characters and setting, as well as in terms of subject and theme.

This year, the Thumbs Up! Award Committee has chosen The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.  The Fault in our Stars tells the story of Hazel, a teenage cancer patient.  Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten.

The Honor titles that were chosen for 2012 are Divergent by Veronica Roth, This Dark Endeavor by Kenneth Oppel, and A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness.  All of these titles are available through KDL.  Click on the title of the book to place a hold today!
