Find A Grave

I know there are people who don’t like to visit cemeteries, but I am not one of them!  I have spent many hours wandering around looking for familiar names as well as interesting headstones.  I know I am not alone in this because there is a website, Find A Grave, where many people have added information and uploaded pictures.  So if you like to look at headstones this is the site for you!  It is also popular among the genealogy crowd since it is a way to virtually visit cemeteries far from home.  There is also an option for requesting pictures from volunteers in the area of the cemetery.

Another neat feature of the website is their famous grave search.   Having recently read The Last Stand by Nathaniel Philbrick, I can search and find George Armstrong Custer’s memorial site with pictures.  This will tide me over until I get a chance to visit the Little Bighorn for myself!

Thanks for this info – I’m going to check the site out ASAP. I grew up going to cemeteries with my grandmother … just to look around and enjoy the peace and the interesting grave markers. Now I love to stop and look in cemeteries when I’m traveling. I plan on making a scrapbook soon, with pictures of all the beauty I see in my visits to cemeteries.

Sounds like a fun project! Family Tree Magazine is coming out with a book this fall, Grave Humor, which looks very interesting also.
