New Music Download Service
We are pleased to be the first library system in Michigan to provide its patrons access to Freegal, a new music download service. Log in to Freegal using your library card number, and search for your favorite songs among hundreds of thousands of recordings offered by Sony Music Entertainment. Each person can download up to three songs per week, and the counter will reset at midnight on Sundays.
Freegal allows you to search for songs by artist, composer, song, album, genre, and any combinations of those. Every song has a sample clip you can listen to before downloading. The downloads on Freegal are all in the MP3 format with no DRM. This service will work with any MP3 player, including iPod, and can be loaded into iTunes. It works on both PCs and Macs.
Check out Freegal today, and start downloading!
UPDATE (11-1-10): KDL has upgraded its subscription to the Freegal music service so the library as a whole is no longer limited to a maximum number of weekly downloads available. Each individual user is still limited to 3 songs per week, but you won’t have to “beat the rush” by downloading early in the week anymore!

Sounds great, but I can’t log on to Freegal using my valid KDL #. Are other people able to use it now? Why can’t I?

Hi Dave,
Please email your card number to me at webmaster@kdl.org and I’ll investigate why you are unable to log in to the service.
Thanks,
Sheri

I love it! I haven’t had any trouble at all, and I’ve found a few tracks that I’ve previously had a rough time finding.
Thanks for adding this service on to everything else you offer us!

This is the best! No shortage of old standards to add to my collection, some newer stuff too.

I can’t access it either. It’s a grpl card, does that not work?

Hi Topher,
The new Freegal music download service is limited to KDL cardholders only, as KDL has paid an additional subscription fee for this service. If this is something you would like GRPL to offer to their cardholders, feel free to recommend to them that they consider subscribing as well.
Thanks,
Sheri

Hi Christine,
Your card number indicates that your library card was issued by the Grand Rapids Public Library. Freegal is limited to KDL cardholders only, as KDL has paid an additional subscription fee for this service. If this is something that you would like GRPL to offer to their cardholders, feel free to recommend to them that they consider subscribing as well.
Thanks,
Sheri

Hi, I cant log on to Freegal either. What can I do?
October 11th, 2010 at 10:55 am
Hi Sam,
The first 5 digits of your card number indicate that your library card was not issued by the Kent District Library. Freegal is limited to KDL cardholders only, as as KDL has paid an additional subscription fee for this service. If this is something that you’d like your home library to offer to their cardholders, please suggest it to them.
Thanks,
Sheri

Selected songs but was not able to download. Download now button not available.

Hello Charles,
KDL has a limited number of available downloads per week, and my guess is that we had reached our maximum when you tried to download. Now that it’s a new week, your downloads should be successful.

When will the library request more downloads per week. I can only come here on Saturday or Sunday, and I want to be able to download music, but I can’t at home because my mom won’t let me.

Hi Louis,
We’re not able to add more downloads at this time due to our budget.

Hi Daniel,
If you are still unable to log in to Freegal today, please email me at webmaster@kdl.org with your library card barcode number so I can check if there is an issue with your account. Or if you prefer, you can call our Patron Services Department at 616-784-2007 and a staff member can assist you.
Thanks,
Sheri

FYI
If you are having trouble logging in with your card make sure you link to freegal from here, if you just google it, the sign in will ask you for a password (unlike through here) and it will not work.
