Virtual Book Clubs for Busy People
Although I’d love to join a book discussion group, like many of you, I just don’t have the time to add one more commitment to my busy life. So I was very excited to discover that Barnes & Noble offers a wide range of “virtual” book clubs on their website.
These book discussion groups are done totally online, and you can spend as much or as little time as you’d like, posting your thoughts on your favorite books, or just “lurking” and reading what others are discussing. And they’re totally free – although I’m sure B&N would love you to buy more books from them, you can always get the books from your local library
No matter what your taste in books, there is a discussion for you, from current popular titles such as Jodi Picoult’s Nineteen Minutes, to classics like Anna Karenina, as well as ongoing areas for talking about your favorite genres, such as “Romantic Reads,” “Paranormal & Urban Fantasy,” and “Teen Reads.”
But perhaps the best feature is the “Center Stage” group, where your favorite authors actually join in the discussion for a limited time to answer your questions about their books. How cool is that! This week’s featured author is Sara Paretsky, and other big names such as Anne Rice, Jonathan Kellerman, George R. R. Martin, and Elizabeth Berg are scheduled for upcoming weeks.
What do you think? Have you discovered any other similar online discussions? Does this kind of “virtual” book discussion appeal to you, or do you prefer a face-to-face group?
