On Tuesday, April 1 Kent County welcomed Ha Jin, author of A Free Life, the one 2008 One Book, One County selected title. Since the announcement of the book selection in January, all of Kent County has been reading and discussing Ha Jin’s novel about a Chinese immigrant family living in America.
After a book signing at the downtown Schuler Books & Music, Ha Jin spoke at the Fountain Street Church in Grand Rapids. He discussed his writing process, his own immigration experience and how he crafted the story of the Wu family for A Free Life. Ha Jin then took questions from the audience, both about the One Book, One County title and his other writings.
Following his talk, Ha Jin was presented with a Michigan gift basket by members of the selection committee. He then signed books and spoke with One Book, One County participants.
The Kent District Library would like to thank Ha Jin for coming to Grand Rapids and sharing his experience. Thank you also to everyone who participated in One Book, One County this year! We’d love to hear your feedback and suggestions for next year’s title.
