The New Caledonia Branch is Open!

The new Caledonia Township branch, located at 6260 92nd St., is now open and we encourage you to check it out! The new building is more than four times the size of the previous location and includes a lounge for kids, a wireless bar, and a quiet, fireside area for reading. Visitors will also enjoy fourteen computers offering high speed Internet, a deck for outdoor programs and reading, an art gallery and more. Groundbreaking for the new library took place on April 21, 2010 and the library opened to the public on Tuesday, February 1.

A Grand Opening Celebration will take place at 9:30 am on Saturday, February 12. Festivities will include music, crafts, balloons, cake and fun throughout the day.

The new library is beautiful and will be a great asset to our community. However, I find it to be a shame that this resource will continue to be underused because of the current limited hours. I could have done without a new library if I can’t get there when it is open!

    Hi Chris!

Thanks for your comments on the new library. Caledonia Township did a beautiful job and we hope you enjoy this warm and inviting space.

In opening this new library, we expect to see an increase of 30-40% in library visitors in its first year. In anticipation of that increase, KDL worked to budget additional technologies, staffing and collections.

Sadly, we could not afford the staff needed to increase its hours. In 2011, we faced close to a million dollars in decreased revenue. We will see more in 2012. We would like to add hours someday and hope for a better future for our libraries.

    Thanks for your support!

I do agree with Chris George that extended hours would be helpful to the community, I also understand that budget it always an issue. I would be willing to volunteer several hours a week if it would help make the library more available to all. If there are others that could also contribute some time perhaps we could coordinate a group of supportive citizens.
