There were two things that intrigued me before I even started reading Five Flavors of Dumb by Antony John: the title and the cover art. This book was a surprise favorite, one I hadn’t planned on reading but thoroughly enjoyed!
High school senior Piper has one month as manger for the rock band Dumb to get a paying gig. One problem is that Piper cannot actually hear the band and another is that the band has never had a paying job Plus they only know one song. That one month changes Piper and the band in unexpected ways.
Just in time for the 40th anniversary of Joplin’s death this past October, try Janis Joplin: Rise up Singing by Ann Angel. This biography is an in-depth look at the early life and rise to fame of Janis Joplin. There are a lot of amazing pictures to establish the time period as well. This book won the 2011 YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults.
