New Bilingual Storytime Programs

In September, the Kent District Library will expand its bilingual Storytime programs at several branches. As part of “The American Dream Starts @ your library” grant, KDL will offer bilingual Storytimes aimed at increasing literacy services to English language learners and their families. These programs will use volunteer Storytime Ambassadors to incorporate both English and either Spanish, Chinese or Japanese, and will provide cultural experiences for families through stories, songs and crafts.

Increase your English skills, learn about a new language and culture, and have fun with the whole family! No registration required.

Look for bilingual Storytime programs at the following branches: Cascade Township, Tyrone Township, Gaines Township, Kentwood, Grandville and Wyoming.

  2. Trish Says:

This is a great idea! You should let schools know about this.

  3. Tammy Says:

I would be very interested in a German storytime. Will there be more opportunities for additional languages available?? Thank you.

  4. Denise Says:

Hi everyone! Thanks for the great responses!

    – Registration is NOT required for our Bilingual Storytimes. You can just show up ready to enjoy! 🙂
    – Thank you for the suggestion to inform area schools about these Storytimes! We will look into doing more of that. We have already informed some schools, and we will continue our efforts to increase as much awareness as possible.
    – We would love to have a German Storytime, too! All of our Bilingual Storytimes are being led by community volunteers – our Storytime Ambassadors. At this point, we only had volunteers who speak Chinese, Japanese and Spanish. If you know of anyone who speaks another language, or if you do yourself, and would be interested in volunteering to lead Storytimes in additional languages, please contact us! We are always looking for more volunteers, and we are hoping to offer more Storytimes in more languages in the future!

Please contact Denise Robinson at or 616-784-2016 ext. 2221 if you are interested in volunteering as a Storytime Ambassador in the future!

The Chinese story time is great. It would be nice to see bigger crowds, though the 5pm time might be tough for some.

Are you in need of any volunteers to read? Is there some testing of language skill level necessary to do so? I have 2 daughters in Spanish Immersion in Rockford and would love to come, help, volunteer…
