“Sisters Red” & “Sweetly” by Jackson Pearce

I know Sisters Red has been mentioned before, but I recently read Sweetly and I would like to give a shout out to both these books by Jackson Pearce.

Sisters Red is inspired by Little Red Riding Hood.  Scarlett and Rosie were attacked by a Fenris, a wolf, who ended up killing their grandmother.  Since then, the girls have done everything they can to destroy the Fenris they find in the area.  When the population of Fenris seems to be increasing, the girls and their friend Silas set out to find out why the wolves are gathering and who their target might be.

Sweetly (due out in August) is a companion book to Sisters Red and is inspired by the Hansel & Gretel tale.  Gretchen, her twin sister & their brother Ansel walk in to the woods but only two of them return.  Haunted by this event from 12 years ago, Gretchen & Ansel decide to go far away from the woods.  Their car breaks down near the town of Live Oak and there they meet Sophia Kelly, the owner of the sweetshop.  Despite being told that Sophia is a witch, the pair stay and becoming entangled in the annual chocolate event where girls from the town have attended and were never seen again.

If you enjoy retold fairy tales, try books by Gail Carson Levine, Shannon Hale or Robin McKinley.
