It is not to soon to begin preparing for the 2012 release of the 1940 US Census!  The 1940 census will be released on April 2nd, but this does not mean there will be an name index available at that time.  So to get started, check out Stephen Morse’s Census Enumeration District finder.  Using this tool, you can determine which district to locate your ancestor based on the state and city.  This will allow you to start using the census as soon as it is released!
