Of course the ultimate free software is Linux itself. I prefer Ubuntu, http://ubuntu.com

Topher beat me to it: you can’t beat having a free operating system like Linux (tho, I prefer Kubuntu)
Also, Malwarebytes is another good, free spyware removal program: http://www.malwarebytes.org/

I also like to get free programs (and ones that are free to try) through download.com. It is helpful to read the reviews from users.
