What great books have you read this summer already? So far my favorite is Beauty by Frederick Dillen, which is a novel about an east coast fishing plant that is trying to re-open against great odds in a small fishing town.

    Happy reading!

  2. Diana DeYoung Says:

I listened to a Playaway, The Saturdays by Elizabeth Enright.

  3. Vanessa, KDL Staff Says:

I just read a great book from our Local Indie Collection. It’s called Grand Rapids Food: A Culinary Revolution by Lisa Rose Starner. It’s a wonderful overview of the gardening and local foods movement in our area, and it points out some of the major entrepreneurs and innovators in this area. It was a really interesting read!

  4. Vanessa, KDL Staff Says:

Diana, another great story set in NYC is All of a Kind Family by Sydney Taylor. You might like that one, too. Happy reading!

  5. Andrea Says:

I read An Abundance of Katherines by: John Green from the summer reading list Teen: Adventure. I really enjoyed the book as well as John Green’s other books like the Fault in Our Stars and Looking For Alaska.

  6. Vanessa, KDL Staff Says:

Hi Andrea! I just had someone suggest a great new book for lovers of John Green. Have you tried Guy in Real Life by Steve Brezenoff?

The lives of a heavy-metal goth boy and an RPG-playing hippie-girl collide — literally — when Lesh crashes his bike into Svetlana’s after a concert. These two shouldn’t fall for each other, but we all know love doesn’t always follow the rules, right?

Rainbow Rowell’s books are also wonderful. Happy Reading!

  7. Paula Says:

We love requesting books from the online catalog. My boys love getting the latest book in a series they are reading or trying a book from the recommending reading list for their grade level.

  8. Vanessa, KDL Staff Says:

I love series books, too! Have your boys read The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart? That’s a great series.

  9. Threcia McCullough Says:

My daughter Taylor is just starting to be able to read. So we have read a bunch of first reader books. She is loving the Mila books. But she really wants to be able to read chapter books. So I took her to the kids section and we got LOVE YA BUNCHES. I am reading it to her every night for the passed couple nights and we are already half way through and she loves it.

  10. Vanessa, KDL Staff Says:

I’m glad you are enjoying the book and reading together. It’s such a great way to spend time with one another. One of my favorite early chapter books is Clementine by Sara Pennypacker. Give it a try!

  11. Jamerson Says:

I really enjoy reading graphic novels. We were able to request the next book in the Sonic The Hedgehog series I started reading through the online catalog and MELCat. I’m excited for the book to come in so I can see what happens next.

  12. Vanessa, KDL Staff Says:

Have you tried the Lunch Lady graphic novels by Jarrett Krosoczka? A lot of people have really enjoyed those, too!

  13. Jessica Says:

We have taken road trips twice this summer and we have checked out a few children’s audio books for each trip from the library. Our kids have loved listening to the stories and reading along in the books. Their favorites have been Library Mouse, Mouse Soup and anything Curios George!

  14. Kris Says:

I have a book requested now, but it hasn’t come in yet. I also have been using the suggested books for toddlers and preschoolers pamphlets

  15. logan Says:

I like Curious George books and going to the zoo, so I had my grandma read me Curious George Visits the Zoo.

  16. Vanessa, KDL Staff Says:

Have you tried Mo Willems? I love the Elephant and Piggy books. And I absolutely love The Big Red Barn by Margaret Wise Brown (who wrote Goodnight Moon). It’s filled with great animal pictures. Happy reading!

  17. Wendy Says:

I’ve requested multiple books from the library catalog this summer. One that I hope to actually try using soon is a book with hikes in the Grand Rapids area. I love getting out and hiking in the woods. 🙂

  18. Vanessa, KDL Staff Says:

Have you seen the sign for the Free one day pass to the Michigan State Parks? You can pick these up in the branches. Happy Hiking!

  19. Caleb Says:

I read “Brothers at Bat” and I thought it was really good. So I read it over and over.

  20. Vanessa, KDL Staff Says:

I love it when you find a book you want to read again and again! You might also like some of the books by twins Ronde and Tiki Barber who became NFL players. Try the book By My Brother’s Side. Enjoy!

  21. Leah Threatt Says:

I went to ruff readers. It was so much fun reading to the dog!

  22. Lorelei Says:

This summer I’ve listened to Ralph S. Mouse, Superfudge, Fudge-a-mania, Young Fredle on audiobooks and I’ve requested a book about reptiles and amphibians of Michigan. All of them were fun!

  23. Morgan Says:

I requested Julie of the Wolves from the online catalog. It’s cool that we have 18 libraries in one and can share so many great books!

  24. Vanessa, KDL Staff Says:

There were a lot of fun reading options this summer. I’m so glad you all were able to participate in them!
